If you get into the theater, it seems to you that you are something more than other people: stronger, more ingenious, more humane, more necessary, more sensitive. You forget yourself, you are driven by the ambition to be an artist at all costs and you quickly fall between the cogwheels of the theater machinery, which always wants its own and never what you want. And then the deformation occurs - involuntary, mostly unconscious, but also unchangeable - of the poetic character that got into the theater. Nothing is as it was in your eyes when you first stepped behind the scenes. Moreover, nothing is as it should be.
It is already in us, "it will develop and suck us" - both today and at the time when Bulgakov began to put his unfinished "Theatrical Novel" on paper. The length of life begins to scroll strangely and reminds of something else:
"The theater is in semi-darkness. I stand by the ramp. I watch as the artist Aurora Gosier walks around the spinning circle with the ruler, touching it gently to the floor. Gosier's blond hair flares as if on fire as she leans toward the end of the ramp, then goes out and it becomes like ashes. And I think that everything that is happening now, that drags on so painfully, everything will have its end..."
